Depending on the size and location of rectal polyp, certain patients may be candidates for TAMIS (Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery).
What is Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) uses laparoscopic tools access to the rectum and remove polyps. There are no external incisions needed, drastically reducing downtime and discomfort.
TAMIS Procedure
TAMIS is typically performed using general anesthesia, so you’ll be completely asleep and relaxed throughout the procedure. To begin, a specialized port is placed within the anal canal to provide access to the rectum. Then, the rectum is inflated with carbon dioxide which allows for more working room. Your surgeon will be able to visualize and remove the polyp.
TAMIS Aftercare
Most patients are able to return home after surgery. You’ll need to arrange for transport home from a close friend or family member since you’ll be drowsy from the anesthetic. You should expect to rest and recover for a few days, but you’ll have no external incisions to take care of.
