When it comes to colorectal health, knowledge is power. Understanding how colorectal cancer (also referred to as colon or rectal cancer) develops and how it can be prevented is key to early detection and better outcomes. At Arizona Colorectal Experts, we believe in empowering our patients with informed decisions.
What Is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer begins when abnormal cells develop in the inner lining of the colon or rectum (part of the large intestine). Often these cancers start from benign growths called polyps (abnormal growths on the inner wall of the colon), which, over time, and if left unremoved, can turn into cancer.
Because of this progression, early screening matters. The sooner abnormal growths are caught, the better the chance of preventing invasive cancer. At Arizona Colorectal Experts, we emphasise that many cases are treatable, and often curable, when found early.
The Stages of Colorectal Cancer
Staging describes how far the cancer has progressed. It helps guide treatment decisions and gives insight into prognosis. Most widely used is the staging system from the American Cancer Society (ACS).
Here’s a breakdown of the stages:
- Stage 0 (“carcinoma in situ”): At this earliest stage, abnormal cells are present but are still confined to the innermost layer of the colon or rectum (the mucosa). The cancer hasn’t grown beyond this.
- Stage I: The cancer has grown into the submucosa or muscle layer of the colon wall, but has not spread to nearby lymph nodes or distant sites.
- Stage II: At this stage, the cancer has grown through the muscle layer and may have invaded the outer wall of the colon or nearby tissues/organs — but still hasn’t yet spread to nearby lymph nodes. Sub-stages (IIA, IIB, IIC) reflect greater depth or spread.
- Stage III: Cancer has spread to one or more regional lymph nodes but not to distant organs. Again, sub-stages (IIIA, IIIB, IIIC) are determined by the number of nodes affected and the extent of the primary tumor’s growth.
- Stage IV: This is the most advanced stage. The cancer has spread (metastasised) to distant parts of the body, such as the liver, lungs or peritoneum (lining of the abdominal cavity).
Why Does the Stage Matter?
Knowing the stage of colorectal cancer helps your care team at Arizona Colorectal Experts determine:
- What treatment options are most appropriate (e.g., surgery alone vs surgery plus chemotherapy or radiation).
- The likely outcome and what follow-up will be needed.
- How aggressively to monitor for recurrence or spread.
Because colorectal cancer often develops slowly, catching it at Stage 0 or I significantly improves the chance of a full recovery with less invasive treatment. On the other hand, later stages require more complex care. Early detection truly saves lives.
Prevention: Reducing Your Risk
Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, and taking a proactive approach can significantly reduce your risk over time. At Arizona Colorectal Experts, prevention is a major part of our mission because simple lifestyle changes combined with timely screenings can dramatically lower the chances of developing colon or rectal cancer.
Here are the most effective steps you can take to protect your colorectal health:
- Screening & Regular Check-ups: At Arizona Colorectal Experts, we recommend a colonoscopy beginning at age 45 (or earlier if you have risk factors).
- Diet & Lifestyle Modifications: A diet rich in fiber, vegetables, fruits and whole grains, combined with limiting red/processed meats and high-fat foods, can reduce risk. Maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically active also help.
- Avoid Tobacco & Limit Alcohol: Smoking and heavy alcohol use are known risk factors for colorectal cancer.
- Manage Chronic Conditions: If you have inflammatory bowel diseases (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) or a strong family history of colorectal cancer, working closely with a specialist is critical.
- Polyp Removal: Since most colorectal cancers start as polyps, removing polyps when found during a colonoscopy is one of the most effective preventive measures.
