When Should You Get Your First Colonoscopy?

If you are thinking about when to get your first colonoscopy, you are not alone. What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that lets doctors look inside your colon and rectum. During the procedure, a flexible tube with a tiny camera gently moves through your large intestine so the doctor can check for colon polyps or signs of colorectal cancer. If polyps are found, they can often be removed on the spot, which helps prevent cancer before it starts.

Understanding the Right Age to Start Screening

For many adults with no personal or family history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, the general recommendation is to begin screening at age 45. Starting at age 45 gives you the best chance to find and remove early growths while they are still harmless.

Once your first colonoscopy is done and the results are normal, most people will only need to repeat the screening about every ten years. This interval may change if something unusual is found during your test or if your health changes over time.

Who Might Need to Start Earlier

Some people should think about having their first colonoscopy before age 45. This includes:

  • Anyone with a first-degree relative, such as a parent, sibling, or child, who has had colorectal cancer
  • People with a personal history of certain polyps or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Individuals with genetic conditions that increase colorectal cancer risk

In these cases, your doctor may recommend starting earlier and having colonoscopies more often based on your health history.

Symptoms to Watch For

While screening for cancer is the most common reason for a colonoscopy, there are other situations where your provider might suggest the test sooner, regardless of age. Symptoms that could warrant an evaluation include:

  • Unexplained changes in bowel habits
  • Blood in your stool
  • Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Unintended weight loss

If you are having symptoms that concern you, it is important to talk with our team as soon as possible so we can determine the best next steps together.

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

We do everything we can to make your colonoscopy as smooth and stress-free as possible. Before the procedure, you will follow a clear liquid diet and a bowel prep plan, so your colon is clean. On the day of the test, you will receive medication that helps you relax and can make you sleepy, so you feel comfortable and calm.

The procedure itself usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Because of the sedation, you will need someone to drive you home afterward. Most people feel back to normal later the same day or the next morning, though you may feel a little bloated or gassy at first.

Why Timing Matters

Colonoscopy is a valuable tool because it not only detects early signs of cancer, but it also prevents cancer by removing polyps before they grow. Starting at the right age and continuing regular screenings gives you the best protection for your long-term health.

Waiting too long could mean missing a chance to catch something treatable at an early stage. Likewise, starting too early without risk factors might not be necessary for everyone. That’s why we work with you to personalize your screening plan based on your health and family history.
